If what happened to you is not on that list, it is still worth asking.

What do Santa Clarita’s crash figures show for bicycle accidents?

In the California Office of Traffic Safety rankings for 2023, where rank 1 is the worst in the group, Santa Clarita ranked 57th of 62 cities its size for cyclists killed or injured, with 21 victims, which is toward the better end of its group. Cyclists under 15 ranked 44th of 62 with 4 victims, somewhat better than average. Those 21 cyclists sit inside a total of 765 people killed or injured on Santa Clarita roads in the same figures. The rankings are rate-based, adjusted for population and daily vehicle miles travelled, so the comparison is with the other 61 California cities of 100,001 to 250,000 people. On the state’s own measures this is a comparatively safe city of its size to ride in, and we are not going to pretend it is not.

What follows for a claim is a documentary problem rather than a statistical one. Santa Clarita publishes no Local Roadway Safety Plan, no Vision Zero plan and no High Injury Network. Its Traffic and Transportation Planning Division does publish Bike Santa Clarita and Trails and Paseos material, but that is route and facility information, not a hazard assessment, so a cyclist here cannot point to a City document that has already identified the lane or junction as dangerous. The record has to be built instead: the Sheriff’s collision report, the City’s maintenance, complaint and signal records obtained by Public Records Act request, and the bicycle itself.

That last point is the one most often lost. A bicycle case usually turns on position and right of way rather than speed, and it is won or lost on physical evidence: the damage pattern on the bike and the vehicle, the lane markings, whether a bike lane was present or obstructed, and any camera covering the junction. A bike is often repaired or thrown away within days, which destroys the best evidence in the case, so it should be photographed and kept rather than fixed. Where the road surface contributed, through a defect, a drain grate, an abrupt lane drop or an obstructed lane, the defendant may be a public entity, and that changes the deadline completely. Road works matter here too: Bouquet Canyon Road has been closed between Plum Canyon Road and David Way since 13 February 2026 for a realignment the City expects to run about 11 months, with the detour routed through Haskell Canyon Road and Copper Hill Drive, so those roads are carrying traffic they were not carrying before.

The report comes from the Sheriff, because Santa Clarita contracts its policing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department rather than running a police force. The handling agency is the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 26201 Golden Valley Road, on (661) 260-4000, and every collision in a contract city is documented on a CHP 555 form under the Sheriff’s own policy, with the original routed to the Records and Identification Bureau in Norwalk within five days and a copy to the City. The Sheriff’s published fee schedule, effective 30 June 2022, charges $25 with the file number and $35 without it.

Where is a Santa Clarita bicycle accident case filed, and what are the deadlines?

California is a pure comparative fault state, so an argument that you were outside the bike lane, or not visible enough, reduces a recovery rather than ending the claim. Against a driver the deadline is generally two years from the injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1; against a public entity, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months and the shorter deadline governs. Filing is fixed by Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A), so a Santa Clarita case is filed in the North Valley District at the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Avenue, the Santa Clarita Courthouse having criminal and traffic divisions only.

More on local practice on the Santa Clarita personal injury page, and on the law itself on the Los Angeles bicycle accident page. The other collision types with Santa Clarita’s own published figures: car accidents, pedestrian accidents and motorcycle accidents. Mass tort claims are taken on for Santa Clarita residents as well, and those are set out on the mass torts page.

  • Direct access to your lawyer. Bejan Broukhim personally reviews your case and leads its strategy. You can speak directly with him about your case, and if another law firm is ever brought in, that happens only with your written consent.
  • Years of experience, fully licensed. Bejan Broukhim brings years of experience in California personal injury and mass tort law and holds an active California law license, State Bar number 183036.
  • Local knowledge of Santa Clarita. That means the early steps that protect your claim start on day one.
  • No fee unless we recover for you. You pay nothing up front. Your case is taken on a contingency fee, so the fee comes out of what is recovered, and if nothing is recovered you owe no fee. The written agreement, signed before any work starts, also explains how case costs are handled.
  • Ready for court. Every case is prepared from day one as though it will go to trial, so any settlement offer is measured against a case that is ready to be tried.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Santa Clarita bicycle accident questions.

It turns on three things: whether someone else’s carelessness caused the injury, what the medical record actually shows, and whether there is insurance that reaches the loss. Those are the questions the first conversation is for. It is free, it is confidential, and if there is nothing worth pursuing you will be told that rather than signed up. Bring whatever you have, and keep the bicycle unrepaired, because its damage geometry is usually the best evidence in the case. Santa Clarita ranked 57th of 62 cities its size for cyclists killed or injured in 2023, toward the better end of its group, so a bike claim here is built on the physical evidence rather than on a city-wide pattern.

The first conversation costs nothing, it is confidential, and it carries no obligation. Beyond that, injury and mass tort matters are taken on a contingency fee, so there is nothing to pay up front and the fee is paid out of what is recovered. If there is nothing recovered, no fee is owed. The costs of running a case, things like court filing fees, records and expert work, are a separate category from the fee, and they are explained in the same agreement rather than left to the end. That agreement is put in writing and signed before any work starts, which is what California law requires. Ask about all of it on the first call.

Against a driver, generally two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Against a public entity, which is the usual position where a lane obstruction, grate or surface defect contributed, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months and that shorter deadline governs. Santa Clarita publishes no claims page and no claim form that we could locate, so the claim is presented in writing to the City Clerk at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., Suite 300, with Risk Management on (661) 286-4148 as the City’s own claims contact. Keep proof of what was sent and when.

The Chatsworth Courthouse at 9425 Penfield Avenue, in the North Valley District. Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) requires every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property to be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose, and the Court’s own filing locator returns Chatsworth as the single answer for Santa Clarita addresses. The Santa Clarita Courthouse at 23747 West Valencia Boulevard sits in the same district but has criminal and traffic divisions only, with no civil division, so a bicycle injury case cannot be filed or heard there whatever its size.

An adult, most likely at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, which holds a Level II adult trauma designation and is the only designated trauma center in the Santa Clarita Valley. Designations are made by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency as the local agency, and the California EMS Authority publishes the consolidated list, updated 8/25/2025. Henry Mayo carries no pediatric trauma designation on that list, so a seriously injured child on a bike is likely to be taken out of the valley. The next nearest adult centers on the list are Providence Holy Cross and Dignity Health Northridge, both in the San Fernando Valley.

No. California is a pure comparative fault state, so even if some share of the blame is found against you it reduces a recovery rather than ending the claim. A cyclist is entitled to use the roadway, and leaving a bike lane is lawful in a range of circumstances, including a lane obstructed by a parked vehicle, debris or a surface defect. The answer comes from the physical evidence rather than from either account: the damage geometry on the bike and the vehicle, the lane markings, the obstruction if it is still there, and camera footage. Keep the bike unrepaired until it has been examined.
