If what happened to you is not on that list, it is still worth asking.

What do Santa Clarita’s crash figures show for car accidents?

In the California Office of Traffic Safety rankings for 2023, where rank 1 is the worst in the group, Santa Clarita placed 52nd of 62 cities its size for total people killed and injured in traffic, with 765 victims. Speed-related collisions ranked 61st of 62 with 65, second best in the entire group. Nighttime collisions ranked 57th of 62 with 56, and hit and run 59th of 62 with 32. These rankings are rate-based, adjusted for population and daily vehicle miles travelled, so they compare Santa Clarita with the other 61 California cities of 100,001 to 250,000 people rather than counting raw collisions. Read honestly, they say that on the state’s own measures Santa Clarita is a comparatively safe city of its size, and there is no crisis here to manufacture.

None of which helps the person who was actually hit. A city-wide rate is a planning statistic, not a defence, and it reduces nobody’s injury. What it does change is the paperwork. Santa Clarita publishes no Local Roadway Safety Plan, no Vision Zero plan and no High Injury Network. Elsewhere in the county a claimant can point to the city’s own plan naming the corridor where the crash happened, which is evidence of what the city knew and when. In Santa Clarita no such document exists, so the record has to be assembled from the collision report, the City’s traffic and signal records, and a Public Records Act request made early enough to matter.

Santa Clarita has no city police department. General law enforcement is provided under contract by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the handling agency inside the city is the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 26201 Golden Valley Road, on (661) 260-4000. Under the Sheriff’s Manual of Policy and Procedures section 5-05/050.05 every traffic collision in a contract city is documented on a CHP 555 form, and section 5-05/070.10 routes the original to the Records and Identification Bureau in Norwalk within five days, with a copy to the City. Who owns the road matters as much as who wrote the report. Interstate 5 and State Route 14 both serve the valley, joined since 2007 by the City’s Cross Valley Connector along Newhall Ranch Road and Golden Valley Road. A collision on the 5 or the 14 is normally a California Highway Patrol matter rather than a Sheriff’s one, and the roadway there is a state asset rather than a City one. Sierra Highway, by contrast, is the old alignment of State Route 14 and is now a City-designated major highway, so the identity of any public defendant can change within a short distance.

Where is a Santa Clarita car accident case filed, and what are the deadlines?

California is a pure comparative fault state, so a share of the blame reduces what you recover rather than ending the claim. Against another driver the deadline is generally two years from the injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Where a public entity is involved, including the City or a Santa Clarita Transit bus, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months, and the shorter deadline governs. Filing is then fixed by geography. Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A), amended and effective 1 January 2026, requires every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property to be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose. For Santa Clarita that is the North Valley District, and the Court’s own filing locator returns one courthouse, Chatsworth, at 9425 Penfield Avenue. The Santa Clarita Courthouse on West Valencia Boulevard sits in the same district but has criminal and traffic divisions only, so no civil injury case is filed or heard there.

More on local practice on the Santa Clarita personal injury page, and on the law itself on the Los Angeles car accident page. The other collision types with Santa Clarita’s own published figures: pedestrian accidents, bicycle accidents and motorcycle accidents. Mass tort claims are taken on for Santa Clarita residents as well, and those are set out on the mass torts page.

Looking for a top-rated, trusted car accident lawyer in Santa Clarita?

Here is what you get when you choose Broukhim Legal PC.

  • Direct access to your lawyer. Bejan Broukhim personally reviews your case and leads its strategy. You can speak directly with him about your case, and if another law firm is ever brought in, that happens only with your written consent.
  • Years of experience, fully licensed. Bejan Broukhim brings years of experience in California personal injury and mass tort law and holds an active California law license, State Bar number 183036.
  • Local knowledge of Santa Clarita. We know how a Santa Clarita claim works: which agency’s report it starts from, which Los Angeles Superior Court district hears it, and the six month deadline that applies when a public agency is involved. That means the early steps that protect your claim start on day one.
  • No fee unless we recover for you. You pay nothing up front. Your case is taken on a contingency fee, so the fee comes out of what is recovered, and if nothing is recovered you owe no fee. The written agreement, signed before any work starts, also explains how case costs are handled.
  • Ready for court. Every case is prepared from day one as though it will go to trial, so any settlement offer is measured against a case that is ready to be tried.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Santa Clarita car accident questions.

It turns on three things: whether someone else’s carelessness caused the injury, what the medical record actually shows, and whether there is insurance that reaches the loss. Those are the questions the first conversation is for. It is free, it is confidential, and if there is nothing worth pursuing you will be told that rather than signed up. Bring whatever you have: the collision report if one exists, photographs, the name of anyone who treated you, and your own insurance policy. In Santa Clarita the early work is unusual, because the City publishes no Local Roadway Safety Plan to point at and the report sits with the Sheriff rather than with a city police department.

The first conversation costs nothing, it is confidential, and it carries no obligation. Beyond that, injury and mass tort matters are taken on a contingency fee, so there is nothing to pay up front and the fee is paid out of what is recovered. If there is nothing recovered, no fee is owed. The costs of running a case, things like court filing fees, records and expert work, are a separate category from the fee, and they are explained in the same agreement rather than left to the end. That agreement is put in writing and signed before any work starts, which is what California law requires. Ask about all of it on the first call.

Generally two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1 where the defendant is another driver. If a public entity is involved, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months, and that shorter deadline governs. Santa Clarita is unusual here: the City publishes no claims page, no claim form and no statement of the six-month rule that we could locate. The statute applies anyway. In practice that means a written claim delivered to the City Clerk at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., Suite 300, with Risk Management on (661) 286-4148 as the City’s claims contact, and a kept record of what was sent and when.

Chatsworth, in the North Valley District. Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) requires every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property to be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose, and the Court’s own filing locator returns a single courthouse for Santa Clarita addresses: the Chatsworth Courthouse at 9425 Penfield Avenue. The Santa Clarita Courthouse at 23747 West Valencia Boulevard is listed in the same district but has criminal and traffic divisions only and no civil division, so nothing civil is filed or heard there. Hearings and witness travel should be planned on that basis.

Most likely at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, which holds a Level II adult trauma designation and is the only designated trauma center in the Santa Clarita Valley. Designations are made by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency as the local agency, and the California EMS Authority publishes the consolidated list, updated 8/25/2025. Henry Mayo carries no pediatric trauma designation on that list, so a seriously injured child is likely to be taken out of the valley. The next nearest adult centers on the list are Providence Holy Cross and Dignity Health Northridge, both in the San Fernando Valley.

No. California is a pure comparative fault state, so a share of the blame reduces a recovery rather than ending the claim. Adjusters routinely assign a claimant a high percentage within the first fortnight, before anybody has examined the physical evidence, which is one of the main reasons not to give the other side a recorded statement early. Santa Clarita ranked 61st of 62 cities its size for speed-related collisions in 2023, second best in its group, so a blanket speeding allegation is not supported by any local pattern and should be tested against the evidence.
