In the California Office of Traffic Safety rankings for 2023, where rank 1 is the worst in the group, Santa Clarita ranked 42nd of 62 cities its size for motorcyclists killed or injured, with 36 victims. Set that next to the city’s other 2023 placings and the pattern is clear: 52nd of 62 for total people killed and injured, with 765 victims; 61st of 62 for speed-related collisions, second best in the whole group; 58th of 62 for pedestrians and 57th of 62 for cyclists. The rankings are rate-based, adjusted for population and daily vehicle miles travelled, so the comparison is with the other 61 California cities of 100,001 to 250,000 people. Santa Clarita is a comparatively safe city of its size, and we are not going to manufacture a crisis out of it. But 42nd is nearer the middle than any of its other numbers, and the raw count tells the same story: 36 riders hurt against 37 pedestrians, in a city with many more people walking than riding.
There is one real advantage to being injured on a motorcycle in this valley rather than most of Los Angeles County. Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia holds a Level II adult trauma designation and is the only designated trauma center in the Santa Clarita Valley. Designations are made by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency as the local agency, and the California EMS Authority publishes the consolidated list, updated 8/25/2025. So a seriously injured adult rider is likely to be treated inside the valley rather than transported out of it, which keeps the trauma records, the imaging and any hospital lien in one place. A seriously injured rider under 18 is the exception, because Henry Mayo carries no pediatric trauma designation on that list.
The real difficulty in a motorcycle claim is not the city’s crash rate, it is the assumption a rider is met with. Adjusters routinely assume the rider was speeding or splitting lanes recklessly, and assign a high comparative fault percentage early, before anyone has examined the evidence. Lane splitting is lawful in California, so the question is whether it was done at a reasonable speed in the conditions, not whether it happened at all. California is also a pure comparative fault state, so even a share of blame found against a rider reduces the recovery rather than ending the claim. All of this is answered the same way, with physical evidence: the gouge and skid marks, the damage geometry, the helmet, the protective gear and any camera footage, gathered before it disappears. Santa Clarita’s second-best-in-group placing for speed-related collisions is at least a useful answer to a blanket speeding allegation, because no local pattern supports it.
Where the road itself contributed, through gravel, a utility cut, debris or a surface defect, the public entity that owns the road may be the defendant, and who that is varies within the city. Interstate 5 and State Route 14 are state highways, normally investigated by the California Highway Patrol rather than the Sheriff, with the roadway a state asset; Sierra Highway, the old alignment of State Route 14, is now a City-designated major highway. Everywhere else in the city the handling agency is the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, because Santa Clarita contracts its policing rather than running a police force, and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 26201 Golden Valley Road documents every collision on a CHP 555 form. Canyon alignment is a live issue for riders: the City is realigning Bouquet Canyon Road and lists a straighter roadway alignment, additional lanes and improved sight lines among the safety benefits it expects, while the road is closed between Plum Canyon Road and David Way since 13 February 2026 with the detour routed through Haskell Canyon Road and Copper Hill Drive.
Against a driver the deadline is generally two years under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1; against a public entity, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months and the shorter deadline governs. Filing is fixed by Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A), so the case goes to the North Valley District at the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Avenue, because the Santa Clarita Courthouse has criminal and traffic divisions only.
More on local practice on the Santa Clarita personal injury page, and on the law itself on the Los Angeles motorcycle accident page. The other collision types with Santa Clarita’s own published figures: car accidents, pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents. Mass tort claims are taken on for Santa Clarita residents as well, and those are set out on the mass torts page.

It turns on three things: whether someone else’s carelessness caused the injury, what the medical record actually shows, and whether there is insurance that reaches the loss. Those are the questions the first conversation is for. It is free, it is confidential, and if there is nothing worth pursuing you will be told that rather than signed up. Bring whatever you have, and keep the bike, the helmet and the gear as they are, because they are evidence. Santa Clarita ranked 42nd of 62 cities its size for motorcyclists killed or injured in 2023, so a rider’s claim here rests on the evidence in the file rather than on any local pattern.
The first conversation costs nothing, it is confidential, and it carries no obligation. Beyond that, injury and mass tort matters are taken on a contingency fee, so there is nothing to pay up front and the fee is paid out of what is recovered. If there is nothing recovered, no fee is owed. The costs of running a case, things like court filing fees, records and expert work, are a separate category from the fee, and they are explained in the same agreement rather than left to the end. That agreement is put in writing and signed before any work starts, which is what California law requires. Ask about all of it on the first call.
Against a driver, generally two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Against a public entity, which is the usual position where gravel, a utility cut or a surface defect contributed, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months and that shorter deadline governs. Santa Clarita publishes no claims page and no claim form that we could locate, so the claim is presented in writing to the City Clerk at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., Suite 300, with Risk Management on (661) 286-4148 as the City’s own claims contact. On a state highway the owner is the state rather than the City, which changes who the claim goes to.
The Chatsworth Courthouse at 9425 Penfield Avenue, in the North Valley District. Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) requires every unlimited civil action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property to be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose, and the Court’s own filing locator returns Chatsworth as the single answer for Santa Clarita addresses. The Santa Clarita Courthouse at 23747 West Valencia Boulevard is in the same district but has criminal and traffic divisions only and no civil division, so if you were cited at the scene that citation may be dealt with locally while the injury case is heard in Chatsworth.
Most likely at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, which holds a Level II adult trauma designation and is the only designated trauma center in the Santa Clarita Valley. Designations are made by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency as the local agency, and the California EMS Authority publishes the consolidated list, updated 8/25/2025. For an adult rider that is an advantage, because the trauma records, imaging and any hospital lien stay in one place. Henry Mayo carries no pediatric trauma designation on that list, so a seriously injured rider under 18 is likely to be taken out of the valley, and the records will then sit in two hospitals.
No. Lane splitting is lawful in California, so the issue is whether it was done at a reasonable speed in the conditions, not whether it happened. And because California is a pure comparative fault state, even a share of blame found against you reduces a recovery rather than ending it. What usually decides the percentage is physical evidence rather than either account: gouge and skid marks, the damage geometry on both vehicles, the helmet and protective gear, and camera footage. Santa Clarita ranked 61st of 62 cities its size for speed-related collisions in 2023, second best in its group, so a blanket speeding assumption has no local pattern behind it.
