If what happened to you in El Monte is not on that list, it is still worth asking.

What do El Monte’s crash figures show for motorcycle accidents?

In the California Office of Traffic Safety rankings for 2023, where rank 1 is the worst in the group, El Monte ranked 52nd of 62 cities in its population group for motorcyclists killed or injured, with 12 victims. Because rank 1 is the worst, 52nd of 62 is toward the better end of the list, and it is the best position El Monte holds anywhere in that table. The underlying count is low as well: 12 of the 553 people killed or injured in traffic in El Monte that year were on a motorcycle. There is no honest way to describe El Monte as a city with a motorcycle crisis, and this page does not try to. The rankings are rate based, weighting counts against population and daily vehicle miles travelled, so they say El Monte compares well with similar sized cities on this one measure, not that riding here is safe.

What the same table does show is an environment that is hard on anybody exposed. El Monte ranks 8th of 62 for total people killed and injured with 553, 1st of 62 for hit and run collisions with 80, which is the worst rank in its size group statewide, 10th of 62 for nighttime collisions with 59, and 10th of 62 for alcohol involved victims with 74. A rider has no structure around them, so a collision that bruises a driver can be catastrophic on a bike, and the risks behind El Monte’s worst ranks, a car that leaves the scene, poor light, a driver who has been drinking, are the ones a rider is least able to absorb. The City’s own Vision Zero Action Plan, published in February 2022 on collision data for 2008 to 2019, records an average of three deaths and 13.5 severe injuries a year on its roadways across all road users, against a target of zero by 2027. Those are historic figures, not current counts.

A motorcycle case is usually fought over two things: whether the driver looked, and how much of the outcome an insurer can put on the rider. Collisions on El Monte streets are investigated by the El Monte Police Department, which releases reports only through its Records Bureau, in person at the Police Lobby at 11333 Valley Boulevard, generally in about ten business days and at no charge. A collision on Interstate 10, which the City’s own plan describes as bisecting El Monte from east to west, is normally a California Highway Patrol matter instead, and that freeway is a state roadway rather than a City one. Road surface also matters far more to two wheels than to four, so a defect claim is a realistic line of enquiry on the arterials the City’s plan already names, among them Peck Road, Garvey Avenue, Valley Boulevard, Durfee Avenue, Ramona Boulevard, Tyler Avenue, Bryant Road, Magnolia Street and Lower Azusa Road.

Where is an El Monte motorcycle accident case filed, and what are the deadlines?

Where the City is a potential defendant the timetable shortens sharply. Against a driver you have two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Against a public entity, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months, presented to the City Clerk’s Office at 11333 Valley Boulevard, City Hall E, on the form the Clerk’s Office posts, which asks for a diagram of the place of the accident and must be signed under penalty of perjury. California is a pure comparative fault state, so an argument about your lane position or your speed reduces a recovery in proportion rather than ending the claim, and El Monte’s speed related collisions ranked 31st of 62 in 2023 with 57, around the middle of the group, so there is no local presumption that speed was the cause. An unlimited civil injury case arising in El Monte is filed in the East District, at Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza, Pomona, because the El Monte Courthouse has no civil division.

There is more on the city on the El Monte personal injury page and more on the law on the wider Los Angeles motorcycle accident practice page. El Monte’s other collision pages cover car, pedestrian and bicycle claims. If your matter is a drug, device or product claim rather than a collision, Broukhim Legal PC also takes on mass tort and complex litigation work for people living in and around El Monte. This site also has a Spanish version, reachable from the Español link in the menu.

Looking for a top-rated, trusted motorcycle accident lawyer in El Monte?

Here is what you get when you choose Broukhim Legal PC.

  • Direct access to your lawyer. Bejan Broukhim personally reviews your case and leads its strategy. You can speak directly with him about your case, and if another law firm is ever brought in, that happens only with your written consent.
  • Years of experience, fully licensed. Bejan Broukhim brings years of experience in California personal injury and mass tort law and holds an active California law license, State Bar number 183036.
  • Local knowledge of El Monte. We know how an El Monte claim works: which agency’s report it starts from, which Los Angeles Superior Court district hears it, and the six month deadline that applies when a public agency is involved. That means the early steps that protect your claim start on day one.
  • No fee unless we recover for you. You pay nothing up front. Your case is taken on a contingency fee, so the fee comes out of what is recovered, and if nothing is recovered you owe no fee. The written agreement, signed before any work starts, also explains how case costs are handled.
  • Ready for court. Every case is prepared from day one as though it will go to trial, so any settlement offer is measured against a case that is ready to be tried.

COMMON QUESTIONS

El Monte motorcycle accident questions.

It depends on three things: whether a driver or a public entity failed in a duty owed to you, what the medical record actually shows, and whether there is insurance that reaches the loss. Those are the questions the first conversation is for. It is free, it is confidential, it carries no obligation, and if there is nothing worth pursuing you will be told that rather than signed up. The city ranking does not decide it either way: El Monte sits 52nd of 62 cities its size for motorcyclist victims, toward the better end of that group, and the case still turns on your own collision. Keep the machine unrepaired, keep the helmet and gear, and bring your own policy, because rider injuries routinely exceed a minimum liability policy.

The first conversation costs nothing, it is confidential, and it carries no obligation. Injury matters are then taken on a contingency fee, so there is nothing to pay up front and the fee is paid out of what is recovered. If there is nothing recovered, no fee is owed. The costs of running a case, things like filing fees and medical records, are a separate category from the fee, and they are explained in the same agreement rather than left to the end. That agreement is put in writing and signed before any work starts, which is what California law requires, so there is no arrangement you have not read.

Two deadlines run at the same time and the shorter controls. Against a driver it is two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. Against a public entity, Government Code section 911.2 requires a written claim within six months of the cause of action accruing, and El Monte’s own claim form prints that rule in those terms. The form and the City Clerk FAQ both direct claims to the City Clerk’s Office at 11333 Valley Boulevard, City Hall E, El Monte, CA 91731. It asks what act or omission you say caused the injury, must be signed under penalty of perjury, and warns that presenting a false claim is a felony under Penal Code section 72.

The East District, at Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza, Pomona. Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) requires every unlimited civil tort action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property to be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose, so an El Monte crash is filed in the East District rather than downtown. The El Monte Courthouse on East Valley Boulevard is in that district but has no civil division at all, hearing criminal and traffic matters only, so nothing civil is filed or heard there. The Court’s own filing court locator returns a different district for some zip codes carrying the El Monte name, including 91770 and 91780, so the street address should be checked rather than the city name.

Almost certainly outside El Monte. Greater El Monte Community Hospital is not a designated trauma centre. In the Los Angeles County EMS Agency’s Trauma Center Umbrella Facilities Directory, Reference No. 506.2a, effective 1 April 2025, it appears as an umbrella facility assigned to Los Angeles General Medical Center, which the California EMS Authority’s Designated Trauma Centers list, updated 25 August 2025, records as a Level I adult and Level II paediatric trauma centre. Designation is made by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency, and the state authority publishes the list. Motorcycle injuries are the kind that trauma triage is designed for, so a rider’s records are often split between the first facility and the trauma centre.

No. California is a pure comparative fault state, so a share of responsibility reduces what you recover in proportion to that share and does not bar the claim. Arguments about lane position, visibility or speed are arguments about a percentage, and they are answered with the scene: the point of impact, the marks on the road, the damage to the bike and the vehicle, and any camera covering the junction. It is also worth noting what the local figures do not support. El Monte ranked 52nd of 62 cities its size for motorcyclist victims in 2023, toward the better end of the group, and 31st of 62 for speed related collisions, around the middle, so neither reckless riding nor local speed is a safe assumption.
